Nabisco Puts Safety First in TV Ads

New York, NY - October 4, 2000 - The Children’s Advertising Review Unit (CARU) of the Council of Better Business Bureaus, Inc. (CBBB), is pleased to announce that Nabisco,Inc. has agreed to modify television advertising for its KoolStuf™ Oreoâ Toaster Pastries (KoolStuf), which came to CARU’s attention through a consumer complaint.

The commercial, in an opening sequence, depicted Oreo cookies going into a toaster and popping up as KoolStuf toaster pastries. The complainant stated that her four-year-old son, after viewing the commercial, put Oreo cookies in the toaster in an effort to replicate what he saw on television, and then attempted to remove the melted cookies from the toaster with a pair of metal tongs and a pair of scissors. After the safety concern was brought to Nabisco’s attention by CARU, the company agreed to modify the opening sequence and remove any depictions of Oreo cookies in a toaster.

The CARU’s inquiry was conducted under NAD/NARB/CARU Procedures for Voluntary Self-Regulation of National Advertising and resolved within 60 business days. Details of the inquiry, CARU’s decision and the advertiser’s response will be included in the next NAD Case Report.
